Side Extension Hove

This project came to life as the clients had held off making changes to their home for 10 years of living there. They decided to not only tackle the side return extension of their Victorian terrace house but also update bedrooms and living spaces as well. It felt overwhelming in terms of decision making for them and they asked DEN LIFE interiors to help with designs throughout and support them with project management during the process as well. With both clients working full time and a young family it meant less time overheads for them and last minute panicked decision making, as I could be on site to support and deal with any issues during the build and refurb stages.

As with all side returns in Victorian style properties the costs  versus square meterage you are gaining seem insanely high. But what you end up with in how the home works and its flow is quite amazing. By adding space to have an open plan kitchen/diner you can bring in tons more light at the back and then you gain a room in the middle as a second lounge, cinema room, home office or whatever you need. In this instance the client wanted a grown up space so we added more storage and bar area with a reading nook. It now gives, what can often be a walkthrough, a real purpose and has added another space to the family living areas. You also then open up onto your patio gardens and have an 'outside room' that with easy access gets much more use too.

We also tackled both children's rooms as they lacked storage and needed an update. By using freestanding Ikea units we built a wall of furniture in the little girl's room with lots of room for trinkets and a lit mirror and dressing table. Then bespoke alcove storage for the boy's room with a trophy display shelf blending into a homework/gaming desk. Both rooms now have floor space and can be kept tidy (ish as they're kids after all). And I love how Taylor Swift has made it everywhere in the girls bedroom!

The overall feel of the house is now calmer as areas have function and there are clear zones and plenty of storage. We kept the colours soft and pared back with shots of brightness and it really lets the personality of the clients shine throughout too. There are a few final jobs to attend to in the garden but this home is ready to be lived in and filled with fun times.
